Right away I could notice something different in Sugarpill’s new EP release on Muti Music, “Space Foray.” Breaking away from the producer’s usual hip hop inspired glitchy bass this album takes the listener on an elevated, intergalactic journey through outer space, just as the title suggests. When I finally looked up the word ‘foray’ I found that it means, “a brief excursion, especially outside one’s accustomed sphere,” and it all made sense. Sugarpill has attempted a different direction for this release, which still incorporates aspects of his style from previous work, but in comparison is much more downtempo. I love space-inspired sounds, so I ate this album up. It works very well as a whole, each track blends into the next and really creates another world through which to travel.

Level 21” is a catchy and gripping, opening track, with claps over a polytemponic beat. Bouncy with some swagger, it’ll pull you right into the next levels.

Now you are entering space in “Sputter Star,” rising, weightless up through clouds until you are surrounded by twinkling stars. The tempo picks up and you are launched forward through the galaxy at light-speed, and yet everything around you seems to move in slow motion as you rocket by. Glittering melodies are beautiful and enchanting, and the driving bass is not lost, but propels the music forward like an engine on a space ship.

With “BlipSquip” I imagine some creature you’d encounter on your space travels. Distorted synths lash out like twisted tentacles and laser beams shoot out through gnashed teeth.

Space Foray” is definitely a high point in the album, bound to enliven dance floors, people bouncing with hands in the air, weaving in and out of each other, getting down to this triumphant track. High energy synths, and what sound like space owls, overlaid and syncopated with the heavy-hitting beat create an invigorating soundscape.

If this album was a soundtrack the next, “Galactic Interchange,” would definitely be fit for a chase scene. Siren synths and convoluted glitch create a hyphy and darker atmosphere, which is reminiscent of Sugarpill’s older, more bass-centric work.

Some of the EP’s only sampling is found in “RisoMorph” also recollective of Sugarpill’s prevalent sound. The lack of sampling in “Space Foray” is the most obvious aspect of this albums divergence into a more flowy, instrumental sound. The samples in this track are even cut so that they are used as sounds, not as words.

In one of the most spacey tracks of the album, “Lightyears,” you are spun around among the stars one last time, and you wave goodbye to the speck that is planet Earth, before being propelled onwards, drifting off into the outer corners of the universe.

In todays world of generic and boring, mass market produced, consumer inspired crap its refreshing to find something that breaks barriers down and challenges peoples conceptions on their imposed reality. The weirdly wonderful world of LA underground bass music is a perfect example of this, challenging its listeners with intricate, unique and otherworldly sounds, and drawing them into something unheard of before. Emerging through this growing micro community is a new breed of producer, one that isn’t afraid to do things their way with an added romantic twist.

GoldRush and his family of musicians have given fresh sound to his brilliant first album by releasing LOVE HZ RMXD, featuring remixes by some of the funkiest producers in the bass community. Each producer attaches their own distinct sound and style to the original track, while also keeping the original GoldRush essence alive.

I was first blessed with the intriguing sounds of GoldRush at the mystical wonderland of the “The Fish Fry” as they call it, presented by The Do Lab at Coachella in 2011. After, I was also fortunate enough to witness Benlloyd drop his most epic, bass filled, romantic tunes under the moon for a nightfall set at Burning Man. His range of bass and groovy instrumentals always has me stuck waiting for me. From festival to festival he always has something new to bring to the table. His presentation is hard to walk away from no matter where it may be. It is safe to say that GoldRush never disappoints. Everything from his energy to his swagger is admirable; a definition crowd pleaser with a badass hood.

LOVE HZ RMXD features remixes by Ruff Hauser, Gladkill, +verb,Richard Sweat, Stephan Jacobs, Sugarpill, jOBOT and LoBounce. These new tracks truly hit your soul making your feet want to move instantly. Beatport.com created a ‘Top 100 releases’ list and announced that LOVE HZ RMXD was number fifteen. It is no surprise to me to see this artist grow as fast as he has in the past few years because of his remarkable talent.

Carpe Diem for Lovers” is given a masterful remake by Ruff Hauser, dripped in a beautiful bassline and layered with all the essential GoldRush goodness. This track still carries the enchanting vocals that implanted the original version in my heart. “S.C. Honey” is given an +verb remix that sends the original on a journey into outer space realm. The OG vocals are accompanied by a heavier bassline and glitched out synths. Another standout track on the release is Richard Sweat’s remix of “Super Symmetry”, aptly named the Droptop Spaceship remix. This tune vibes the original GoldRush feeling of flying through a hectic game of space invaders on a spaceship, accompanied by a progressive bassline and an assortment of spaceship bleeps. I truthfully couldn’t help but shoot a few lasers out of my fingers as I write this! Sugarpill gives “MySkye” his bass-heavy touch, and the always funky jOBOT gets his way with another remake of “S.C. Honey” using the original vocals and giving it his own dose of jOBOT bass. LoBounce gives my favorite GoldRush track, “Pop Rocks”, an impressive funkified feel, turning it upside down in the best way possible. Also featuring remixes by Stephan Jacobs and Gladkill, Love HZ RMXD is an absolutely masterful album, featuring deliciously well-crafted basslines and the most intricate of melodies and haunting vocals. These tunes rightfully deserve its place in the music collection of any avid bass head space traveller.

While awaiting GoldRush’s next performances at this years west Coachella and Lightning in a Bottle festival, I can only anticipate the most epic & romantic bass set to date. If you have ever seen GoldRush perform, you are well aware of how naturally he orchestrates his crowd with this high energy, spine chilling, loving beats! Hopefully in the nearby future, he will be able to pay the east coast a visit and shed his inimitable light, representing the LA underground bass community. His fresh sound effortlessly inspires originality, bringing out a “love life” vibration. Listening to LOVE HZ RMXD with your eyes closed brings you on an incredible quest.

Lightning in a Bottle Festival returns again to Silverado, California with a STELLAR line-up of diverse musicians. It “celebrates art, music, performance, sustainability & life” – gives a true meaning to community. The Do LaB has been bringing rare events to LA for awhile now – and this is the third time they are bringing back the successful Lighting in a Bottle. Unlike other festivals, like Coachella, Ultra, and Camp Bisco, the vibes at LIB are future based and give electronic dance music a proper foundation. It’s the beginning for many up-and-coming glitch-hop, future bass, lovestep & cosmic crunk producers Far Arden Recordings and Streets of Atlantis have been working with – in our opinion, the BEST festival lineups to date! This summer 2012, LIB features Sugarpill, Minnesota, GoldRush, Salva, Star Slinger, Opiuo, R/D, The Glitch Mob, Jupit3r, Big Gigantic, An-Ten-Nae, DJ Laura, Tipper, Shpongle, Bassnectar, Gaudi, Bluetech, The Lucent Dossier Experience, Robot Koch, Russ Liquid, D.V.S* & so much more!! “Due to an incredible effort of both our director of sustainability and green team, as well as the entire production crew’s understanding and honoring of this commitment, LIB has continued to set the standard for all US festivals. In fact, LIB was the winner of the 2011 Outstanding Greener Festival Award, 2-years in a row!” -The Do LaB Hope to see you all there!
