Camp Bisco has become a tradition these days, always anxiously awaiting the gathering of artists and strong vibrations that act as a climax of July. This year MCP Presents and The Disco Biscuits give you Camp Bisco 11, including a whole new Silent Disco experience, a fresh lineup of talent, top notch label showcases, fine vending, and a home away from home. SOA: When did you first start making music?

Mimi Page: “I started playing piano at 5. I don’t know what it was.. my whole family are all musicians! I gravitated toward the piano. One of the first songs I wrote were about aliens themed from “Fire in the Sky” (1993) – dark and ambient. I played all instrumental music up until high school when I picked up singing. I would write poetry, sing, and play music! I first put my self-recorded original tracks on myspace.

SOA: What inspires you and your music?

Mimi: Being in the moment. Any experience that can bring me into now. I’m full of energy –  I love to help people and participate in community. Everything! I’m a sponge!

SOA: What were some of your early musical influences?

Mimi: The first album I ever bought was “Pure Moods” with Enigma & Enya!  I was classically trained in piano and I wanted to escape those boundaries. I was sick of Bach & Beethoven. I heard these soundscapes in Enya’s “Orinoco Flow” and in the sounds of Enigma; I felt like I understood textures. It wasn’t until around 11th grade until I learned about electronic music and how to produce yourself. I got into Radiohead, Massive Attack, Boards of Canada…

SOA: What does love mean to you & how does it affect your music?

Mimi: Love is everything. Being completely open to accepting people and who they are. Loving different ideas and trying different things is so important. The first time I went to a rave is where I was inspired to write my song “Beating for You” after attending Electric Daisy Carnival in 2005.  Massive amounts of people loving each other!

SOA: How did you start working with these glitch hop & future bass producers?

Mimi: GoldRush was the first producer I worked with; he used two of my songs, “Come What May” & “I’ll Be Waiting” for a Simplify Recordings release.  Afro Monk & Ethan Baer hit me up for a SubSynthesis compilation release where I first released my single “Black Valentine” & collaborated with  r.e.g. on a track called “Here I Am“. People were giving dubstep a heavy, machinist image and I was discovering this more melodic and love-driven electronic bass music! Ethan Baer recommended I start singing with these more intellectual-type producers and release music. I was also singing with a band called Shotgun Radio and we released a remix album of our track “A Bad Place” featuring remixes by Minnesota, Phrenik, Omega & more! I saw GoldRush open for a Shotgun Radio show and he is unreal! His full performance overall is so impressive; a high energy show! We had to work together!

SOA: Tell me a little about Lightning in a Bottle festival and your performance with GoldRush?

Mimi: It was incredible! I had never sang an electronic remix of my song live before! I was a bit nervous. I record most stuff in my apartment and had never played such a huge set. The vibes and sense of communitywere unreal and there was an immediate response of love and enjoyment. It’s not like that anywhere else!  The Do LaB puts on an amazing festival.

SOA: We recently have heard some new joints you’ve recorded with Gladkill & Montana native, sAuce. Tell me a little about the creative process of producing a track with them.

Mimi: It’s different everytime. With Gladkill, he sent me a beautiful track called “The Night & Skyline” – his music is on a different level than most. All my vocals just came out & that never happens. With sAuce, he sent me a beat with cello recorded in it; lovely production. We finished a track called “The Reminder” with the SPANKiNZ crew (sAuce, SIMPLETON, MetaTron).

SOA: Any future electronic music collaborations coming up?

Mimi: I have been working with Bassnectar on an upcoming track called “Butterfly” and we wrote that for 3 months; 5 songs amd came out with 1. I finished the lyrics to “Butterfly” on Christmas Day! I have a new song coming out with Phrenik as well.

SOA: Where in the universe have you found a place to call home?
Mimi: Beautiful question! My song you heard tonight, “
Jigsaw”, has a line “Tickless tocks and broken clocks, tell the story of this vagrant vagabond” and it’s about me not finding a home anywhere. I’ve moved around to 20 places within the last 8 years. Home is within. Home is also in a community. I feel at home in front of my piano and anything music related.
