Archives for the month of: May, 2012

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) have announced their Summer “Warm Up” sessions, taking place every Saturday to September 8 at MoMA PS1 located in Long Island City, NY. This is a big tradition for MoMA and this Summer they are celebrating their 15th year. “Warm Up” introduces “audiences to the best in experimental live music, sound, performance, and DJs. The annual series is held in MoMA PS1′s courtyard, which this year will feature a temporary urban landscape by HWKN called Wendy, the winning design of MoMA PS1′s 13th annual Young Architects Program.Streets of Atlantis caught the announcement quick, excited for this Summer’s weekly lineups. Artists include Atoms for Peace (DJ Set), Rustie, James Holden, Om Unit, Just Blaze, Floating Point, Shlohmo, Photek, Jamie xx, Pearson Sound, Sinjin Hawke, MJ Cole, Matthew Dear (DJ Set), Sepalcure, and lots more. Don’t miss out on these proper events, they carry some of the world’s illest electronic music DJ’s and producers, all each with an original style and sound. It’s not all the time you get this special blend of artists all in a fine NY art museum, each weekend of the Summer.

The long awaited “ChiaroscuroEP is released on bandcamp for FREE. ANNuNAKii has been picking his game up and putting out a bunch of top notch, heartfelt, original tracks for some time now. He created a sound we can distinctly hear as ANNuNAKii music, or “Dramatic Cosmic Crunk” as he calls it. The new EP features 6 visible original tracks on bandcamp, also with remixes from Burgle and Bleep Bloop. When you pick up the “name your price” download, it gives you a personal favorite of mine and a huge surprise, “Give Me A Reason” as a bonus track. ANNuNAKii really did it up on this one, even with orginal cover art he clearly produced extremely well. It isn’t the first time he has cover art up either; he recently produced Jupit3r’s Vermin Street release cover art and impressed many. I’d say ANNuNAKii is in the obvious top ten up-and-coming electronic producers to KEEP YOUR EYE ON. Please keep a secret, but from what we hear at Streets of Atlantis, his “new new” is BONKERS! Click on the cover art below for a direct link to ANNuNAKii‘s bandcamp and access to his new “Chiaroscuro” EP.

Looking back at Coachella 2012
written by Theresa Rodriguez

Each year music enthusiasts from around the globe embark on a pilgrimage to the desert town of Indio for Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Despite traditional Coachella it turned into two-weekends this year which left many of your typical hipsters in a pickle with synchronizing plans and tickets.

Luckily, I scored golden tickets to weekend 2 from help of a good friend. Increased tension existed between weekend 1 and weekend 2 goers. Weekend 1 confidently argued that they were going to experience the festivities first, but weekend 2 fans were able to see the same show minus all sound and artist glitches and technicalities. Coachella underlying set an initial vibe for the beginning of this cultured, exciting festival season.

I could confidently use the word sweat to convey my weekend 2 experiences and all attendees would universally agree. Temperatures reached over 105, so ruthless that your ice-cold beer would turn warm within sips. Fortunately nothing stopped 35,000 nomads from flooding the gates on Friday morning. Upon getting through what seemed like the Mexican border patrol, my heart immediately brought me to The Do Lab. One can only describe The Do Lab as an Oasis in the middle of the boiling hot, hippie stank, Indio desert. Here your standard barefoot gypsies and bass heads can escape out of the mainstream realm and get down to the most incredible underground music.

The Do Lab masters never disappoint their fans and this year was no different with their creative stage, impressive lineup, and an unlimited supply of water to cool their fans off with. Weekend 1 hosted acts like Pumpkin, GoldRush, NiT GriT and Gladkill, and received phenomal reviews. My favorite act of week 2 was GRiZ, who absolutely held it down weekend 2. It is honestly difficult to relay how badass his set was! From ‘Jump Around’ to ‘Sunday School’, not one song dissatisfied listeners. I look forward to every single one of his future performances because his talent is limitless.

I stumbled upon Sub Focus after rumors of his remarkable, creative time warped set from weekend 1. Luckily I brought my LED pimp light up cane for defense against his circular ring of bright lights and heavy bass. With my eyes closed, it was impossible for me not to imagine myself playing a challenging game of space invaders mixed with Mario Cart of the future. I can safely say that my feet did not stop moving and my cane did not touch the floor. Walking away, I was left speechless, with a smile humming the incredible tune of ‘Rock it’ Sadly, silly Coachella engineers would not let him continue his encore; Sub Focus, you were nothing less than amazing!

I can only dream to one day say “Whats my mothafucking name” and have 35,000 fans respond in their loudest and most energetic voices. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s set also featured guests Warren G, 50 Cent, Eminem, Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Tony Yayo, Currupt and even the departed 2pac as a hologram . It was pretty getting down to those favorite OG classics. As soon as music began, lighters were lit, and clouds began to rise and disperse above the audience. My dreams were complete when 50 Cent came out, as any native New Yorker would agree. At times it was too much; how could there be that much swag on a stage at once?

The Coachella Ferris Wheel is on every attendee’s bucket list. This year it was a goal of mine to experience it both during the day and at night. Riders are blessed with an impeccable view of what seems like ant-size campsites and what seems like forever skyline. In my unforgettable experience, the riders in the cart ahead had the 3-minute opportunity to literally ride the ride. Kudos to that quickie, it was hysterical and legitimately made my day.

When Monday unexpectedly strikes, tents begin to be put away, music begins to fade and goodbyes begin to be exchanged. Just like the day after Christmas one can only begin to dream about next year. Coachella is a magical, mystery land filled with laughter and memories while continuing the celebration of life. Festivals create the happiest fictional empire where attendees escape societies norms and transform themselves into their own creative beauty. Although Coachella has developed into a more mainstream type of festival, it has done so in a manner that preserves its core values while increasing its appeal to unite those intrigued and passionate with the music festival culture. Coachella, until we meet again.

The Disco Biscuits fans have been waiting awhile for something like this, especially on the east coast. Take Bisco Inferno, add some extra heady ingredient(s), put it in Philly, and you have “City Bisco”! Taking place at theMann. on October 5th and 6th, it’s a bundled event package you do not want to miss! As we patiently await the full lineup, we can only guess who will share the bill with The Disco Biscuits this time, as openers range from Raekwon, RJD2, and Mimosa to Daedelus, Bonobo, and The Pnuma Trio. The times move on and producers are making fast moves up the “glitch-hop” and “melodic dubstep” ladder as The Disco Biscuits keep up. Who knows what the lineup will be..? GRiZ? Minnesota? ill-esha? HeRobust? Russ Liquid? Stephan Jacobs? Ha. Let’s just wait for the official announcement.. Stay tuned for an immediate announcement of full lineup and details on streetsofatlantis.com

Russ Liquid finally treats us with his debut official release, an EP on Muti Music entitled “Saving Grace“. Russ has been playing live shows for years, starting in a jazz quintet playing the piano, saxophone, trumpet, and flute. The quintet toured the Carribean and South America playing clubs, parties, and resorts. After being introduced to electronic music production, he started blending his live techniques with internal beats and synthetic sound, creating sexy dancefloor grooves. He has played The Do LaB stage at summer festivals, toured with Opiuo Live Band, co-headlined events with ill-esha, performed at Envision festival in Costa Rica and has quickly made a name for himself as a glitch-hop producer, performer, and member of the Headtron Agency based in Los Angeles, CA. Besides his older independent bandcamp release and a few soundcloud tracks, there hadn’t been too much Russ Liquid on the glitch-hop charts until Headtron released a full compilation on Muti Music which included Russ Liquid‘s “Pars Lunae“. That track, shortly after, became a Streets of Atlantis favorite and top shared track. After the Headtron compilation release, we have been anxiously awaiting an official Russ Liquid debut release. Happy to annouce that it is finally here, the “Saving Grace” EP featuring “Saving Grace“, “Portamento“, “Asencion“, “Tapetonic“, and “Con Fusia del la morte“. This EP is a proper future bass classic; glitched out new melodies, original vocals, live trumpets, and an organic sub sound, a guaranteed favorite!

Since passing 200 likes on the Far Arden Recordings facebook page, we’ve launched a bandcamp to have a spot for the free music. The first is an EP in the “facebook likes series” being released every 100 likes, a 5-track EP featuring GRiDWORK, Hypha, DuBuddha, SounSiva, and Dr. Knobz. You can visit the Far Arden Recordings bandcamp for a free download. All tracks are unreleased and exclusive favorites.

GRiDWORK delivers a beautiful future bass single that blends unique instrumentation, lovestep and hip-hop into a classic track and a wonderful EP opener. GRiDWORK is LA-based and one half of Continuum with jOBOT. He just released a minimix on his soundcloud with about 16 minutes of all unreleased originals, including his “200 Likes EP” track and two Continuum originals. The second track by up-and-coming producer Hypha is another love song with impressive drum work, catchy 808′s and an unbelievable melody. Hypha is featured on Pixelord‘s latest remix release and also just released his own independent 2 track EP called “Distancia featuring a powerful remix by +verb. Look for Hypha on June 22 in Brooklyn, NY at Cameo Art Gallery playing with Illegitimate Children, DuBuddha, and SounSiva!

DuBuddha is featured on track three of the “200 Likes EP” with his track “Schwomp Land“. DuBuddha brings you on a psychedelic journey through his future bass creation; space-like samples & glitchy vocals. “Schwomp Land” is a B-side off his “The Golden Age” EP that we thought you all would enjoy as a free download. Look for “The Golden Age” on Beatport this month featuring the single “Purple Whale Fairy“. After a trip with DuBuddha, you reach track four,  SounSiva‘s midtempo  ”Tribe Light” with a purple bass / hip-hop vibe. SounSiva is seriously growing as an artist, and it shows in his recent production. Stay tuned for his debut EP, “Bucket and Pillows” out soon on Far Arden Recordings for FREE. For the east coast fans, this EP captures the sounds of Hypha, DuBuddha, and SounSiva extremely well and can help give you a “trailer” of the Far Arden showcase event on June 22 at Cameo Art Gallery.

The final track is a real funky glitch-hop tune from Dr. Knobz. This one has been on Dr. Knobz‘ soundcloud, only for stream, for select months and the response has been outstanding. We are excited to include it in the 5-track EP and give it out alongside these other artists. Dr. Knobz is also a co-owner of GruntWorthy records with Carly DeLoach and is a major player in today’s future bass, & glitch-hop.

So if you haven’t already, head to farardenrecordings.bandcamp.com and grab your FREE copy of the “200 Likes EP”.
